Genre: Fantasy Rating (1-5): series as a whole.... 3 Plot: Good-Fair Characters: Very Good Amy Gumm gets torn from her trailer park by a tornado and dropped in a world she learns is Oz, but not the Oz from the movies. Dorothy came back to Oz, and decided to make the land and everyone in it serve her every want and need. Those you thought were Wicked, are Good, and those who were assumed Good, are Wicked. Will Amy and the Wicked find a way to defeat Dorothy and restore Oz to it's former glory? There are enemies on all sides, so pick who you trust wisely. This series started out very enjoyable for me, but after the second book I started to get bored. It was a love hate relationship with aspects I really liked, and then other parts I could do without. I'll start with the negative and then end on a positive note! THINGS I DIDNT LIKE The last two books I was in a hurry to read, mostly because I wanted to be done with them. I finished the series mainly because I don't like leaving series incomplete, and I wanted to give the story a chance to grow on me. In all honesty, it wasn't a story that had me completely enamored. One thing that really bugged me was the love aspect of the series. I won't say who it is between because I want to remain spoiler free! Anyways, I understand why there was a romance aspect involved in this book, but for me it pretty much didn't seem to exist. And it came out of nowhere. All of a sudden Amy (the main protagonist) is in love, and I didn't see ANY of that developing. So yea, that facet of the story was extremely underdeveloped in my opinion. Another thing I struggled with was that the reading level was a little low for me. I flew through this series, finishing it in just a week. I would say middle schoolers who are avid readers wouldn't have any issues getting through this series. If you are in middle school, or you have a child in middle school, I definitely suggest this series to them! The series does contain profanity, but I wouldn't say there was an overabundance of it used. THINGS I LIKED When it came to the protagonist, Amy, it was very easy to fall in love with her. I think my favorite part about the series was seeing how Amy developed as a person and truly figured out who she was. When it comes to world building, I think Danielle Paige did an exceptional job. Not only did we get thorough descriptions of the landscape, but also of the history of Oz. In some fantasy books, you can get confused very easily because the author doesn't do a good job of providing a good history of the world you are now entering. It was laid out in a fashion that was fluid with the story and everything Amy was going through. The plot was not that predictable, which for me was a change. I can normally predict the ending of most books 25% of the way in, so it was a nice change to be kept on my toes. Danielle Paige has you (and Amy!) trusting and believing one thing, only to throw you for a loop. This was probably a main factor as to why I stuck out the series, because I just didn't know what was going to happen! WOULD I RECOMMEND If you are a die hard fantasy fan, sure go ahead and read it or add it to you TBR (to be read) pile. However, I'm not going to shake you and tell you that you have to read it right now. You can read more about this series on Goodreads here. This is a great resource to use to research books, as well as keep track of all the books you wish to read. If you aren't using Goodreads already, you need to start RIGHT NOW.
